A young woman (Mare Winningham) struggles with her own need for independence and the obligation she feels for her hearing-impaired parents (Ed Waterstreet, Phyllis Frelich) in this depression-era drama. A friend (Sid Caesar) sees her turmoil and tells her she must find happiness on her own. However, the initial joy she finds in marriage starts to strain under the guilt she feels for deserting her parents and the bitterness they express towards her.
	#DVD1426 Loving Leah (67th in Collection) - DVD Movie (preorder today - available in late-July) Price: $19.99 Would you marry your brother's widow to honor an ancient custom you don't believe in? That's what successful bachelor and cardiologist Adam Kaufman is asked to do in Loving Leah. Lauren Ambrose, perhaps best known for her role as Claire Fishe in Six Feet Under, plays the 26-year-old Hasidic Jew widow in this tale that's quirkier than your average Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. Loving Leah, which began as a small play, was brought to Hallmark by Ricki Lake, who plays a Reform rabbi in the movie. Playwright P'nenah Goldstein also wrote the screenplay: "I saw it in a way like Moonstruck or Crossing Delancey. I didn't see it as a Jewish story. It's a love story, and for a love story you have to have a great hook that brings them together. And the hook in this case was that ancient Jewish law. Though they worked under the guise of merely attempting to prevent and contain the spread of Typhus and Spotted Fever, Sendler and her brave cohorts emerged each time with the children of consenting Jewish parents. The children were sometimes sedated and hidden inside boxes, suitcases and coffins as a means of rescuing them from their imminent deportation to death camps. They were given new identities and placed with Polish families and in convents. Sendler kept a hidden record of their birth names and where they were placed with the hope that they would some day be reunited with their own families. In 1943, the Nazis discovered Sendler's daring and dangerous ruse and arrested her. She was tortured by Gestapo agents and suffered broken feet. On the day of her scheduled execution she was rescued by "Zegota," the underground network with which she worked to save the Jewish children. As a result of Sendler's efforts, approximately 2,500 children were smuggled to safety. Not a single child she rescued was ever betrayed or discovered by the Nazis. Stars: Anna Paquin.
